AG #15 Accepting Applications for Spring Funding Cycle: Groups/Orgs

Art Gumbo is now accepting applications from groups/organizations for the Spring funding cycle. Applications are available now through Thursday, March 13, 2014. 7 eligible applications received by 11:59 p.m. on March 13 will qualify to compete for funding. (Individuals are NOT eligible for this cycle).

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Thursday | March 13, 2014 | 11:59 p.m.

EVENT: Thursday | March 20, 2014|  6-8 p.m. at St. Mark Youth Enrichment | 1201 Locust St., Dubuque, IA.

ELIGIBILTY: Groups or organizations whose creative ideas will impact the Dubuque community. You must be present to win. 

HOW IT WORKS: Groups submit a brief proposal of their project. The public attends the Art Gumbo Soup Dinner, they pay $10 to get in, and this money goes into the Art Gumbo Fund for the night. The attendees enjoy the soup, review the packet of proposals, and vote for their favorite. The proposal(s) with the most votes will be awarded the Art Gumbo Fund proceeds for that night. First place & second place will split the proceeds 70/30.

FINAL REPORT: The winner(s) will be invited to the next Art Gumbo Soup Dinner to present a progress (or final) report. Volunteer support is expected by the winner(s) at the subsequent event.

AG #14 Event Recap

28 patron votes, $280, 1 ice storm, and an incredible white bean kale soup from Life's A Feast Catering sent patrons home with warm bellies and sent Tim Olson home with $280 of seed money for the exhibition phase of the DubuqueFest Panorama Photographs. The weather was frightful which made the funding pool lower than usual so together we all decided to give all the $ to the project with the most votes (instead of the usual 2 winners splitting the money 70/30). Stretch that seed funding!

Tim Olson's project: "Tony Moline and I photographed DubuqueFest using a 1930s era studio camera. The camera was pushed along a path that wound through Washington Park. Every 10 feet we stopped and shot a sheet of 5x7, B&W film of whoever was willing to pose. Throughout the two-day festival we photographed 635 people on 220 sheets of film. These traditional negatives are being digitally stitched together to make a long, single photograph in the style of panoramic group portraits created in the first half of the 20th Century. The first phase of the project—the photography—was funded by a grant from the Iowa Arts Council. I’m now looking for funding to create a final, archival print, 14 inches tall by 100 to 110 feet in length. The print will be exhibited at the Center for Dubuque History at Loras College in March and April, 2014, and then at DubuqueFest in May. After this, the print will be donated to the Center for Dubuque History and will be stored in its archive."

AG #13: Call for Submissions: Groups or Organizations

Art Gumbo is accepting applications from arts groups/orgs or creative groups for the Fall funding cycle. Applications are available now through Thursday, September 12, 2013. The first 7 eligible applications received by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, September 12 will qualify to compete for funding.

The next Art Gumbo Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, September 19, 6-8 p.m. at Voices Warehouse Gallery, 10th & Jackson Streets. Featuring soup and bread by the Food Store. Voices SpeakEasy will be open for drinks. (Cash bar). All tips support Art Gumbo.

ELIGIBILTY: Arts groups/orgs or groups with creative ideas whose project will impact the Dubuque community.
